SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Freshman forward Anthony Willett (Springfield, MA) scored three goals and had three assists as the Western New England College men’s hockey team rolled to a 12-6 victory over visiting Assumption in a non-league game Tuesday evening (Feb. 2) at Smead Arena.
After scoring only nine goals in its last eight contest (all losses), WNEC tallied three goals in both the opening and middle periods, and six in the final stanza to raise its record to 2-15-1.
This was the most goals scored by the Golden Bears since a 12-1 win over Suffolk on January 23, 1996.
Eight players scored goal with sophomore forward Kory Grahl (San Diego, CA) contributing two goals and four assists.
Freshman forward Nico Santaniello (East Longmeadow, MA) added two goals while graduate student defenseman Chris Gillman (Wingdale, NY) contributed three assists. Freshman goalie T.J. Fatse (Hampden, MA) stopped 31 shots in gaining his first collegiate victory in six decisions.
Grahl started the scoring binge just 17 seconds into the game with an assists from Willett.
Assumption (10-9-1) came back and took a 2-1 lead following goals by junior defenseman Matt Scioli (North Reading, MA) and sophomore center Taylor Larsen (Blackstone, MA) in less than a four-minute span. Freshman forward Blake Lucier (Scarborough, ME) tied the game with his first career goal at the 10:30 mark before Willett put the Golden Bears back on top with his first goal at 17:34.
Willett scored again at 15:24 of the second period as Western New England College took a 6-3 lead after 40 minutes.
WNEC broke the game open by scoring four times in the opening 11 minutes of the final period with Willett's getting his hat trick at 11:04 that extended the margin to 10-4.
Sophomore forward Pat O’Kane (Hollis, NH) led the Ice Dogs with a pair of goals while freshman forward Keven Meehan (Melrose, MA) had three assists.
Lucier finished with three points after adding two assists while junior forwards Chris Beaudoin (Enfield, CT) and Vinny Weyel (North Haven, CT) also chipped-in with a goal and pair of assists.
