Big week by Western New England College guard Emily Savino leads to two big awards

Emily Savino
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – After helping Western New England College remain undefeated in The Commonwealth Coast Conference (TCCC), freshman Emily Savino (Ellington, CT) picked-up two impressive awards Monday (Jan. 18).

The 5’6” point guard was named both the New England Women’s Basketball Association (NEWBA) Division III and TCCC Rookie-of-the-Week.

Savino played two outstanding games averaging 24.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in conference wins over Roger Williams and Endicott. She also shot 60.9% from the field (14-for-23) and 80% from the foul line (20-for-25).

Savino, a Sport Management major, netted 19 points with seven rebounds and three assists in a 59-52 victory over RWU, before suffering an ankle injury in practice the next day that forced her to miss a game at Emerson (which the Golden Bears won 58-53).

Returning against highly-regarded Endicott, Savino expected to play limited minutes but wound up having her best game of the season with a career high 30 points (9-15 FGs, 11-14 FTs) in 35 minutes in a thrilling 97-91 double overtime win.

This was the seventh consecutive win for WNEC who remained undefeated in the conference at 3-0 while improving its overall mark to 10-3.

Western New England College begins a three-game road trip Wednesday (Jan. 20) against Wentworth in Boston.
