Fredonia uses strong second period to overtake Western New England College in non-league action

- The Fredonia State men's hockey team scored three goals in the middle period for a 4-2 victory over Western New England College in non-league action Friday night (Jan. 150 at the Steele Hall Ice Arena.

The Golden Bears, who were playing for the first time since December 12, are now 1-10-1. 

Senior forwards Jeff Aonso (Toronto, Ontario) and James Muscatello (Baldwinsville, NY), and sophomore forward Bryan Ross (Livonia, MI) each had a goal and assist for the Blue Devils who improved to 12-4.

Aonso started the scoring at 4:38 of the opening period with an assist from Muscatello.

WNEC tied the contest when sophomore defenseman Joe Deptula (Anchorage, AK) scored his first goal of the year at the 10:37 mark with assists from freshman forward Mark Joyce (Needham, MA) and junior forward Vinny Weyel (North Haven, CT).

In the second period, Muscatello converted a 2-on-1 rush at 5:09 following a pass from Aonoso while the teams were skating four a side. Freshman forward Mat Hehr (Sherwood Park, Alberta) tallied the game-winner on a power play goal at 13:17 and Ross made it a three-goal game just 1:41 later.

Western New England College freshman forward Anthony Willett (Springfield, MA) scored his first collegiate goal 23 seconds into the third period to cut the deficit to 4-2. Sophomore defenseman Zach Blauvelt (Lewiston, ME) and sophomore forward Rory Hansen (Noblesville, IL) earned the assists.

The Golden Bears, coached by former Blue Devils assistant Greg Heffernan, couldn't get any closer after missing a pair of power play opportunities while committing a pair of penalties in the final 6:25.

Junior goalie Justin Richards (Somers, CT) kept WNEC in the game by making 56 saves in an outstanding performance, including 23 in the second period. Senior Pat Street (Annapolis, MD) stopped 20 saves for the hosts.

The teams meet one another again at 3:00 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 16) at Steele Hall.
