Phil McLean (62) chases a Siena player during a scrimmage at the Catamount Classic
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The competition was great, the cause was even better.
The Western New England College men’s lacrosse team was among 11 schools that participated in the second annual Catamount Classic on Sunday, Oct. 11 that raised nearly $40,000 for the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston.
The tournament started after a member of the University of Vermont team was diagnosed with testicular cancer in 2007. Following surgery, the player was able to play lacrosse. Although treated in Vermont, he received follow-up treatment at Dana-Farber.
UVM coach Ryan Curtis and his wife Kelly (who previously worked at the Cancer Institute) organized the Catamount Classic – Lacrosse For A Cure in 2008.
“Playing in this event was very special,” said WNEC coach John Klepacki. “I’m happy we did well, but more importantly, it gave our players an opportunity to help raise awareness and money for this disease.”
Western New England College won two of three scrimmages thanks to a strong defense and an exciting transition game.
The Golden Bears defeated Division II Bentley 9-2 in their opening contest as 13 players made their collegiate debuts wearing the Blue and Gold. Division II power Adelphi handed Western New England College a 6-4 loss in the second outing. WNEC ended the day with a 4-2 victory over Division I Siena.
The Catamount Classic marked the end of a four-week fall practice session for the Golden Bears.
“I was impressed how we competed with a young squad,” said Klepacki. “It’s going to be an exciting spring.”
